2026-2027

State Convention Updates

Another exciting year of State Convention is just around the corner, and we couldn’t be more grateful for your continued commitment to National Beta. Your encouragement, leadership, and support make a lasting difference in the lives of your members, and we’re excited to celebrate with you for another incredible convention season.

To help you prepare, all State Convention information, including registration, hotel booking, handbooks, and schedules will open on Wednesday, September 2 at 12:00 PM (ET).

As you begin planning for the year ahead, we’d like to highlight several updates you’ll see during the 2026–2027 State Convention season. While many aspects of State Convention will remain familiar, please take a few moments to review the changes below and be sure to reference the State Convention Handbook once it’s released.

Competitions & Testing

To continue providing fair, consistent, and meaningful competition experiences for our members, several updates have been made to State Convention competitions and testing procedures this year. As always, sponsors should carefully review the State Convention Handbook (when released), as competition rules and procedures may have changed.

Online Testing Platform

All online testing will transition from ProProfs to ClassMarker.

Onsite Testing

Following the model set during National Convention, top placing members of online individual academic tests will take a paper test onsite at State Convention.  The number of students advancing to onsite testing varies by state and is based on attendance. Please refer to the lists below to see how many finalists from online testing will advance.

  • Finalistswill be posted in the National Beta app within 2-3 business days following the closure of the testing and submission window
  • All finalists must complete thetestonsite to be eligible for a state award.

This update enhances fairness and consistencyacross all academic events and ensures the integrity of competitionsat the state level.

Digital Art

The Digital Art competition has been removed from State Convention.

Due to the increased use of AI-generated artwork, it has become increasingly difficult to ensure fair judging and maintain the integrity of the competition.

Competition Viewing

Public viewing has been removed for the following competitions:
  • Accessorized Design
  • Apparel Design
  • Club Trading Pin
  • Living Literature
  • Onsite Cake Decorating
  • Onsite Drawing / Painting
  • Scrapbook
  • Service-Learning Showcase
  • Three-Dimensional Design
  • Two-Dimensional Design
  • Visual Arts (All Categories)

This change was made to prioritize attendee safety and help maintain a safe, accessible convention environment. Large crowds during viewing periods have increasingly created safety concerns while also contributing to damage to club and student projects.

To continue showcasing student work:
  • Images of all entries will be available in the National Beta app under Competition Images.
  • A slideshow featuring competition entries will also be displayed before each General Session.

Candidate & Campaign Updates

Candidate Meeting Requirement

Clubs running a candidate for State Office must have a school representative attend the required Candidate Meeting. This is to ensure that all rules surrounding the candidate and campaign rally are understood by both a school representative and the candidate. Parents will not be allowed as a substitute for the school representative but will be allowed in the meeting. If a parent works at the school, they will be allowed to attend the meeting as the school representative.

If a school representative is not present, the candidate will not be eligible to run for office.

Campaign Rule Violations

Vote deductions for campaign rule violations have increased.
Depending on the severity of the violation, deductions will now be:

  • 50% or 75%

Penalty determinations will be made jointly by National Beta staff and the State Council.

Candidate

2027-2028 Elementary Candidate Update

Beginning with the 2027–2028 school year, only 4th grade members will be eligible to run for Elementary State President or Elementary State Vice-President, or interview to serve as a Regional Leadership Representative. This change ensures that students remain in the Elementary division throughout their year of service and represent the members they were elected to serve. We are providing this information a year prior to allow clubs and sponsors the chance to better prepare to run a candidate.

Registration & Housing

Stay to Save Program

Following the National Convention registration model, State Conventions will now use the Stay to Save program. Clubs that reserve their hotel accommodations through National Beta’s official housing partner, Orchid, will receive the discounted $30 registration rate. Clubs not booking through Orchid will pay a $45 registration fee.

To receive the $30 Stay to Save registration rate, clubs will:
  • Reserve hotel accommodations through National Beta’s official housing partner, Orchid, before registering for State Convention.
  • Enter their Master Acknowledgement Number and Confirmation Number received during registration. This number will be sent directly to your email following booking from info@cvent.com
  • As a friendly reminder, a credit card will be required to make a hotel reservation through Orchid. No fees or deposits are required when booking, however, the card will be used to enforce cancellations. All alternative payment options will be available on the Orchid booking site.
Additional details:
  • Hotel cancellations will incur a $10 per room cancellation fee until a state-specific deadline. After that date, the cancellation fee will increase to $99 per room. This will allow clubs to cancel any unused rooms at a nominal fee while still allowing other clubs who still want to be at the onsite hotel the opportunity to book at the group rate.
